North of the great Peaks lies the land known only as the North. It is a land of humans though the gypsy orcs cross the borders as they please. Many in the Vaporian states consider the Northmen to be barbarians and savages. Although they tried Agatia never conquered the North . The architecture style favours wooden long houses and it is ruled over by Queen Iceheart from the capital city of Dunedenrock. She enforces her law and protects her tenants. For all practical purposes however the Queen rules only for a few miles surrounding the capital. Mostly the villages are ruled by Thanes who in turn swear fealty to the Queen, though not all. Some remember when the North was free and untamed and refuse to kneel before any King or Queen. These dissidents live in isolated areas, amounst the hills and beyond, in the Uttmost North. Slavery is outlawed in the North, unlike in the rest of Vaporia.
Every man in the North is expected to be a warrior. Thanes keep a few Skarls at thier side, men who have made fighting thier primary profession. These men are professional warriors. Some earn themselves a Name, through some deed, brave or humerous or otherwise and join the ranks of Named Men, usually the most elite fighters though not always. Harun Blacktoe gained his name after losing his toes to frostbite. Forley the Weakest was named for being the worst warrior in his clan. It is also possible to have more than one Name. Cormac, of Keln is also known as Mad Cormac and The Quiet Man. He has never been to Keln but is quite mad and legends say that the first you’ll hear of him is the dry click as he snaps your neck.
When war or score settling theatens then the Thane and thier Skarls go amoungst the ordinary men of their villages and recruit men to thier side. These are the Thralls; men whose primary occupation is something peaceful, carpenters, potters, farmers etc. The Thane provides them with such weapons and armour as they can and leads them in battle.
